National Press Day began with the establishment of the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI) on February 9, 1946. Then at the 28th PWI Congress in Padang 1978 which was attended by many press figures, the issue of National Press Day emerged, where Raden Mas Djokomono Tirto Adhi Soerjo became one of the pioneers of the national press. On February 19, 1981, at the 21st session of the Press Council in Bandung, the idea was finally approved and submitted to the government. After going through various considerations, the government finally set February 9 as National Press Day.
